水引の歴史は飛鳥時代６０７年にさかのぼります。小野妹子が遣隋使から帰った際に、中国からの贈答品に紅白の麻紐が結ばれていたのが水引文化の始まりだと言われています。その麻紐が、航海の無事を祈って結ばれていたことから、後の日本では宮廷への献上品に紅白の麻紐を結ぶ習慣が生まれ、その後、日本独自のものとして発展していきました。日本文化では、人様にむき出しで物を差し上げる事はしません。そして、全ての水引結びは、先様の幸せを願って結ばれるものです。そういったことから、全ての贈り物に水引をかけていたのです。今では、デパートなどでは、熨斗（のし）を印刷した紙が贈り物に巻かれ使われていますが、結納などでは今でも豪華な水引飾りが使われ、ご祝儀袋などにも使われています。その歴史は、１４００年以上にもなる日本の伝統工芸です。
